It was a key trading hub during the Middle Ages, serving as a gateway between Europe and Africa. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Tripoli’s port became a crucial center for the export of oil and natural gas.

he Libyan government has recognized the importance of its sea ports for the country’s economic development and has announced plans for their expansion and modernization.

Here are some of the key initiatives:

  1. Rehabilitation of existing ports: The government has allocated funds to rehabilitate and upgrade several of Libya’s existing sea ports, including Tripoli, Misrata, Benghazi, and Tobruk. The goal is to improve port infrastructure, increase capacity, and enhance efficiency.
  2. Construction of new ports: The government has also announced plans to construct new sea ports in strategic locations along the Libyan coast. One such project is the planned construction of a new deep-water port at the city of Susah, which would serve as a major hub for trade and energy exports.
  3. Private sector involvement: The government is encouraging private sector investment in the development of sea ports, offering incentives and concessions to companies interested in investing in port infrastructure and operations.

Mellitah Port is a seaport located on the Mediterranean coast of Libya, approximately 100 kilometers west of Tripoli. It is one of the most important ports in the country, serving as a major hub for the export of natural gas and crude oil produced in the region.

The port is owned and operated by the Mellitah Oil & Gas Company, which is a joint venture between the National Oil Corporation (NOC) of Libya and Italy’s ENI. The port primarily handles natural gas and crude oil exports, but it also has facilities for the handling of general cargo, including food, consumer goods, and construction materials.

Mellitah Port has several berths, each capable of handling large tankers of up to 300,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT). The port has modern handling equipment, including cranes and conveyor belts, as well as storage facilities for natural gas, crude oil, and other petroleum products.

The port is an important hub for the natural gas industry in Libya, with pipelines linking it to the Wafa Gas Field and the Greenstream pipeline, which supplies natural gas to Italy. The port also has a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, which processes and exports LNG to various destinations around the world.
